Northwest Territories Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA) Minister Shane Thompson has renewed the territorial state of emergency originally declared on Aug. 15 in response to wildfires threatening regions across the territory.

The extension will be in effect from Aug. 29 to Sept. 11.

The N.W.T. government declared the state of emergency under the Emergency Management Act to allow government agencies to acquire and deploy wildfire management resources.

“This measure ensures that the Emergency Management Organization is better equipped to support the GNWT, community governments, and public agencies involved in emergency management plans and programs under the Emergency Management Act,” the territory said in a news release yesterday.

Wildfires continue to threaten communities in the North Slave and South Slave regions.

Essential workers are beginning to return to Yellowknife after the capital city evacuated Aug. 18. All other evacuated residents are being asked to stay away.
